The Quinte Rowing Club (ROWQUINTE) offers all its rowing programs from its boathouse and training facilities located on the Waterfront Trail at 35 Keegan Parkway in Belleville. The Club has an indoor exercise area complete with indoor rowing machines and weights as well as an indoor rowing tank for year-round training.

Plan to stay fit this year by participating in one of the best all-round fitness activities there is - rowing

Also make new friends and enjoy the peace and tranquility of a leisurely row on the beautiful Bay of Quinte. Rowing is an all-round fitness activity. It uses all the major muscle groups, encourages a great sense of rhythm, timing and coordination, while at the same time increasing aerobic fitness level.

How long does it take to learn how to row?

Rowing requires a combination of coordination, dexterity, balance, flexibility and understanding of the stroke mechanics. Some people pick up the basics in one or two sessions, others may need nine sessions or more. However, you will see a noticeable improvement after every practice. To improve to a competitive level requires a combination of aerobic capacity, strength, endurance and power.

At the learn-to-row stage, we request that all participants be patient, since it is a team sport and there will be a range of abilities and skill levels in every boat. Participants may be asked to take a turn at "coxing" occasionally. Sitting in the coxswain's seat provides a great view of the crew timing and hand levels. Since the training is in 4's and 8's, at some training sessions, we may have up to three extra people. In these cases, we usually take the extra people in the coach boats (another great opportunity to observe and learn) and then do a crew change on the water.

ADAPTIVE/OUTREACH ROWING

WHY ROW?

Rowing is a good sport for people who desire independence, want to improve their endurance, like water, and are not afraid to leave their wheelchair or crutches behind. Rowing is a sport of mind and body. It is a sport that requires as much concentration as it does physical motion. It is smooth, non-jarring exercise that makes use of all available muscle groups. For this reason, rowing is a great compliment to any form of mobilization, such as walking, wheelchair, or crutches. Rowers find great physical and psychological satisfaction in training, competition, and recreational rowing. The Bay of Quinte offers much beauty, recreation, competition, and a whole lot of fun! ROWQUINTE invites you to join them this season and experience Freedom on the Bay!

ADAPTIVE ROWING

Adaptive rowing allows participation by individuals with numerous types of disabilities, including, but not limited to individuals requiring the use of wheelchairs, canes, crutches, and walkers and the visually impaired.

The basic requirement for participation is the ability to use one or both upper extremities, even if the participant has limited strength. An understanding of the need for safety on and around the water also is required.

The basic techniques of adaptive rowing are the same as with "regular" rowing - balance, timing, and oar work. While the sport is highly technical, it is also very adaptable, based on the needs of the individual rower. Fixed seats are used for those who cannot use the typical sliding seats. For amputees, extra weight may be added to the boat for balance. Pontoons also can be added for extra stability.

ROWQUINTE relies solely on the generous time and energy of its volunteers.

It is a great way to learn to row, meet new people and be an invaluable addition to our crew.

  • Summer (July).
  • Dates and times to be posted on the website.
  • Cost: ROWQUINTE will be under-writing the cost of this program for the initial stage. Openings for six (6) individuals, based on equipment availability and volunteers.

Trillium FoundationWe gratefully acknowledge the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation in their generous support for our adaptive and outreach programs

OUTREACH ROWING

This program is a service provided by ROWQUINTE for disadvantaged individuals and "Youth at Risk" in the Quinte community. ROWQUINTE is working in cooperation with other Service Organizations to locate these individuals who would benefit from our program.

These individuals are incorporated into the regular Youth and Adult Learn-to-Row programs.

  • Spring (May-June) for Adult and Summer (July) for Youth and Adult.
  • Dates and times to be posted on the website.
  • Cost: ROWQUINTE will be under-writing the cost of this program for the initial stage. Openings for eight(8) individuals, based on equipment availability and volunteers.
